There are 3 basic keys to becoming a better athlete: proper nutrition, appropriate shoes, and constant motivation. Keeping your mind and body healthy will allow you to train more consistently and effectively, which makes you better. These weekly reviews aim to educate readers on product available to fulfill their key requirements.
Aisics Gel DS-Trainer 17 The DS-Trainer is the only shoe in the Aisics line designed by their own elite athletes, to be worn themselves. Many of their shoe designers are former runners and several of Olympic quality; so when given the opportunity to build the shoe they would most want to run in, this is what they came up with. Version 17, which came out earlier this month is a little of a throwback to the platform used in versions 12 thru 14. The sole in the last few years had been pumped up to higher cushion the same as most Aisics shoes have been the last few years. But for this year they've dropped the DS-Trainer back to the sleeker, faster sole it used to have. It has now returned to the ranks of a true speed-trainer. Which is good since the DS-Trainer is the shoe that originally invented the speed-trainer category! A few of the technical specs, this shoe uses patented Aisics IGS gel (Impact Guidance System) we all expect, but also Duomax (tm) support for neutral to mild-pronator runners. The two-part upper is designed to allow you to pull the heel toward the arch to lock the foot into the shoe with greater versatility than normal shoes provide. The upper also consists mostly of mesh so it sucks into your foot and reduces blistering and chaffing while still allowing your foot to move in it's most natural way during runs. This is one of the best shoes available for competitive runners to train in. It's light, fast, and provides the full cushioning and support for high-milage runners. Ideally this shoe will be 50 to 60% of your weekly mileage, allowing you to run with better economy - faster turnover, improved foot placement and stride mechanics, and quicker overall pace. You should still have a high-cushion shoe available for recovery days but adding the DS-Trainer is likely to help.
